June 21, 2023
San Diego—The Let’s Go! San Diego campaign coalition held a press conference on Wednesday, June 21, to share new poll results showing strong public support for the campaign and to announce the campaign is off to an energetic start gathering more than 15,000 signatures in the first week alone.
“The Let’s Go! campaign represents a milestone in our region’s progress,” said Gretchen Newsom, Campaign Committee liaison and IBEW Ninth District Political Coordinator. “It is truly inspiring to witness the unity that has brought us to this point.”
The Let’s Go! San Diego campaign was joined today in strong support by community and labor groups, including Environmental Health Coalition, San Diego 350, Climate Action Network, MID-City CAN, SAn Diego County Building and Construction Trades Council, Carpenters 619, LiUNA 89, and IBEW 569.
If approved by voters in 2024, Let’s Go! San Diego will fund much-needed repairs and updates to transportation infrastructure throughout all of San Diego County, including: fixing roads and potholes; adding carpool lanes; expanding bus and rail services; fixing the crumbling coastal rail line; adding an airport rail connection; making safety improvements to bridges, sidewalks, and bike lanes; and ensuring transit passes are affordable for seniors, youth, and the disabled. These investments will also create thousands of good, local union jobs in construction and transit operations.
“We need frequent public transit service,” Iris Contreras urged in Spanish. Iris is a City Heights activist with the Environmental Health Coalition, who outlined the challenges of relying on public transportation when bringing her asthmatic child to medical appointments.
“The Let’s Go! San Diego initiative will ensure folks who are walking, biking, taking public transit or driving can get where they’re going quickly, easily and safely,” said Corinna Contreras, Transit Policy Advocate with Climate Action Campaign. “Let’s make sure this gets on the ballot.”
Kelvin Barrios of LiUNA 89 and the Campaign Committee previewed new polling that demonstrates strong support for Let’s Go! San Diego. “Overall, fifty-nine percent of respondents support the measure. Additionally, fifty-eight percent believe the city needs additional investments in public transit, and seventy percent want to see improvements in our region’s roads.” The full polling memo is available by request.
Our campaign and community coalition gathered more than 15,000 signatures in our first week, and we are on track to deliver 102,000 valid signatures to qualify the measure before the deadline of November 29, 2023.
